Storage is becoming the biggest area of inefficiency that
still exists in the data centre. With the proliferation of
physical servers and the demand to deploy them as quickly as
possible disk storage can be the most difficult resource to
manage.
A more effective way of managing disk storage requirements is
to consolidate the disk storage and present elements of the
total storage via the use of Storage Area Networks (SANs) and
present the underlying storage in a virtual methodology.
Once a storage virtualisation technique is introduced it
presents new opportunities to organisations such as replication
of data to hot sites for rapid recovery or business continuity
solutions.
When combined with consolidation and server virtualisation
technologies the benefits can be huge.
